Mortar on webs

When your laying concrete block in your videos I notice you mortar the front and back edges but not the middle webs of the block. Is this the correct way or does the middle ever need to be done? Does the first course need to have the webs done?

MORTAR ON THE WEB
by: F.J.N.

There has been some discussion i have been privy to regarding Placing mortar on the cross webs of block. Here are some of them: with the configuration of all but 8in. block with most manufactures the webs do not align with one another except in stack bond.As a result mortar contact would be minimal at best.I have seen cross web spreading used for grout containment purposes. With 8in. block typically the cross webs do align vertically however i read spreading of cross webs typically will increase tensile bond strength between units about 8-10% over face shell beding.Compression strength of wall is not a factor effected with either spreading of webs or face shell bedding only.
