Home owner replace brick and cap to chimney

How do I build a concrete cap for my fireplace. I'm replacing 9 courses of brick at top of chimney, their is about 10" of space between the flu and the inside of the outside brick chimney, please advise.

Hello Darrell I would use premixed concrete if the cap is over 3" thick or premixed type S mortar for the cap if it less than 3" thick. You want to be sure the cap goes over to the face of the outside brick on the chimney.
