1860

We have been renovating an 1860 house. The basement has "soft brick" which we understand needs to breath. Unfortunately, this also means that moisture gets into the basement and we have had to use a dehumidifier which is costly to run. What would you suggest we do to create a moisture barrier and still allow it to breathe?

We considered painting the brick but it looks like someone has done that in the past on one wall and now the paint is flaking off.

Would putting up plastic and then some type of wall covering work or are we just stuck with dehumidifying?

I would greatly appreciate your advice.
